In India, the name Bajaj Auto Limited based in Pune, Maharastra is well known for their flagship two wheeler production for decades. A reputed name in the automobile market it has diversified into making small passenger cars for the first time. The company is introducing the Bajaj Lite Car production in January 2008. Middle class aspirations have grown in the country. The need for light family cars has become a viable concept. With many foreign models coming into the country regularly, it makes sense in buying an indigenous car.
The market has become competitive. Owning a car within the one lakh category is a dream that has come true for many people. Otherwise cars would have remained a distant luxury meant only for the rich and famous. Bajaj Auto Limited which has been faithfully churning out two wheelers will now roll out four wheelers in about four years. Named ‘Bajaj Lite Car’ it is under research with two foreign companies having interest and stakes in it. It will be a joint venture between the Indian company and Renault and Nissan Group.
The Bajaj Lite Car is in response to the growing aspirations and the automobile market. It has generated enough curiosity after it was announced. Coming from a sound stable company the expectations from the product are likely to be high. Specifically designed for the Indian roads it was unveiled a week ago. With backing from Renault and Nissan, in four years, the car should hit the dusty roads in India. To be initially priced at Rs. 1, 17, 000/- (although the company is non-committal about the cost) the car will have both engines-diesel and petrol. The car plant is situated in Chakan, where the concept car shall be manufactured. The car will also be put up in the exports category for overseas buyers once it is ready. The company is not concerned how much it will be priced at but is likely to be double efficient in fuel economy which may be the deciding factor for budget conscious buyers in the country.
The Bajaj Lite car is likely to have manual and automatic transmission if the feasibility reports are positive. The group, which is the second largest bike manufacturer in the country, is looking at making in roads in car making for the first time. With the expertise of French based Renault, they are trying to develop the people’s car which hitherto was a Tata domain for decades together. It will also directly compete with the Tata group’s one lakh car.
While the Lite car is the main attraction from the Bajaj Group this year, they will continue to consolidate their supremacy in the two wheeler market. They are launching the 125 cc XCD DTS-i Sprint, sports bike and Discover 150 cc DTS-i Motorbike. The company’s foray in the automobile market should help in increasing financial stakes in the international market. How will the consumer react, can be gauged only after it is test driven especially in the monsoons.
